Join us on Saturday 13 February 2027 when we will be joined by the two winners of the Nuttgens Award, Michael Adam Smith and William Plant, who will be discussing their research projects.

Title: John Flaxman's Indian Monuments
About: In the first decades of the nineteenth century John Flaxman produced nine sculptures to be sent to India, ranging from funerary monuments for East India Company functionaries to a statue of the Raja of Tanjore. Drawing upon material in British and Indian archives, I will examine Flaxman's logistical and artistic approach to transcontinental commissions with a focus on a pair of funerary monuments—to Major-General Sir Barry Close in Chennai and Revd Christian Friedrich Schwarz in Thanjavur.
