About the Event

Hovingham Hall was built by Thomas Worsley in stages from 1751 until his death in 1778. In the design of his new house, he tried to combine his twin passions for architecture and horses. His initial plan was to have the living quarters above the stables, but that proving impractical, the vaulted stables were converted into reception rooms and furnished with statuary. Very unusually the entrance is through a large and impressive Riding House which opens to the former stables. Much of the house was remodelled in 1830s but the ballroom, the Dining Room and Drawing Room are little altered since the late C18.

Leaving Memorial Gardens at 12.15pm, on arrival we will have tea and cream scones before our tour of the house. Afterwards there will be time to explore the attractive gardens and the nearby church with its Worsley monuments before our departure at 4.30pm.
