About the Event
The Group will meet at Harewood House at 2.50 pm (self-transport) for a tour conducted by two members of the curating team from the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies at the University of York. Dr Richard Johns is an expert on Turner, and Professor Chloe Wigston-Smith (currently Centre Director) is a specialist on the dress, fashion history and material culture of the Georgian period.
This well-received exhibition looks at two artistic titans of the late Georgian period – Jane Austen and J. M. W. Turner – both born 250 years ago. Here their work is brought together for the first time, so exploring the way it shapes our view of the country house. Exhibits include paintings, drawings, manuscripts, fashion plates, costumes and many other objects, including the original manuscript of Sanditon and the paintbox Turner used when visiting Harewood.
